Where to Go for a September Holiday in the Sun

September is that sweet spot for holidays – summer’s still lingering, but the chaos of peak travel season has eased off. It’s the perfect time to chase the sun without battling the crowds. Whether you’re longing for golden beaches, a city packed with culture, or just a peaceful retreat to unwind, there’s no shortage of incredible destinations to choose from.

This month gives you the chance to enjoy warm weather while exploring places that feel a bit quieter and more relaxed than they do in the height of summer. Plus, with schools back in session, you’ll often find more affordable flights and accommodation, which is always a bonus!

This guide isn’t just about ticking destinations off a list – it’s about helping you find the kind of break that suits you best, whether that’s sipping wine by the sea, wandering through Instagrammable streets, or soaking up a slower pace of life – these spots are sure to have you dreaming of packing your suitcase.

1. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is one of those places that genuinely feels as magical as it looks in all the photos. The contrast between the brilliant white buildings and the deep blue of the sea is absolutely stunning, and it’s impossible not to feel a sense of calm as you wander through its narrow, winding streets.

The island has a timeless appeal, with every corner offering a new, picture-perfect view. While you’re here, treat yourself to a meal at a local taverna – the Greek hospitality is as warm as the sunshine, and the food is out of this world. Freshly caught fish, tangy feta, and local olives are just the start.

If you’ve got a bit of energy to spare, a hike from Fira to Oia is well worth it – the views along the way are nothing short of spectacular. And for those evenings when you want to slow things down, there’s nothing better than sipping on a glass of local wine as the sky shifts into shades of pink and orange.

An experience you must consider is a Santorini sunset boat ride to hike the volcano; it's undoubtedly one of my most cherished memories from my trip.

2. Malta

Malta might be small, but it’s packed with plenty of character. The blend of historic sites and breathtaking coastal views makes it a standout choice for a September getaway. Start with a walk through Valletta, the capital city that’s filled with history – every corner seems to tell a story, and the Baroque architecture is genuinely something special.

If you’re after a slower pace, head to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, where colourful boats bob on the water and the Sunday fish market is a real treat. The beaches are just as inviting – whether you fancy a dip in the clear and sparkling waters of the Blue Lagoon or prefer a more secluded spot like Għajn Tuffieħa, you won’t be disappointed.

And, of course, the food is an experience in itself – think fresh seafood, traditional pastizzi, and plenty of local wine. Malta feels like a little slice of Mediterranean heaven, perfect for soaking up the sun and culture. It’s no surprise that so many people retire to Malta.

3. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a city full of eye-catching attractions, where every corner seems to hold a surprise. It's also a destination where you’ll most likely find plenty of last-minute holidays to suit your budget. The tiled façades of its buildings shimmer in the sunlight, while the iconic yellow trams rattle through the hilly streets, offering unbeatable views if you hop on board.

The Alfama district is a must for those who love getting lost in winding alleyways, with the soulful sounds of Fado music often drifting out from cosy bars. Foodies like myself will be in heaven here – from creamy custard tarts (pasteis de nata) to hearty bacalhau dishes, Lisbon’s culinary scene doesn’t disappoint.

For a spot of shopping, head to the local markets where you’ll find everything from handmade crafts to fresh produce. And if you’re craving a bit of nature, a short trip to Sintra’s fairy-tale palaces or the sandy beaches of Cascais adds even more to your Lisbon adventure.

Fancy a bit of downtime? Head to one of the nearby beaches or take a short boat trip to Lokrum Island, where you can wander through its lush gardens or take a dip in the island’s calm waters. The local food scene is brilliant too, with plenty of fresh seafood and traditional dishes to tuck into at restaurants with some seriously dreamy views.

For history lovers, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and the well-preserved Roman mosaics in Piazza Armerina are an absolute must. Nature enthusiasts can take a trip to Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, and enjoy the otherworldly landscapes that surround it.

And let’s not forget the beaches – whether you’re lounging on soft sands or swimming in the sparkling turquoise waters, Sicily has a way of making you feel completely at ease its without a doubt one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy.

6. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a city that seems to have it all – sun-soaked beaches, jaw-dropping architecture, and a food scene that’s worth travelling for. Strolling through the Gothic Quarter feels like stepping into another era, with its winding streets and hidden squares buzzing with life.

For a splash of colour, Park Güell is a must-visit, where Gaudí’s artistic flair creates a playful, dreamlike escape. If you’re into food, you’ll love the markets – La Boqueria is a feast for the senses, with everything from juicy fresh fruit to perfectly aged Iberian ham. Don’t forget to stop by a local tapas bar – there’s something special about sharing a selection of small plates with friends or family.

Marrakech is a city that buzzes with energy and colour, offering an unforgettable mix of culture and adventure. The medina is the heart of it all – a maze of narrow streets where you’ll find vibrant souks selling everything from fragrant spices to intricate rugs and hand-painted ceramics. The scent of fresh mint tea drifts through the air, and you’ll often hear the rhythmic clatter of artisans at work.

For a moment of calm, escape to the Jardin Majorelle, it's a lush garden filled with exotic plants and striking cobalt-blue architecture. Food lovers will be spoilt for choice here, with traditional dishes like tagines and fluffy couscous stealing the show. Make sure to grab a seat at a rooftop restaurant and enjoy the view as the city glows in the evening light.

And if you’re up for planning an adventure, a trip to the nearby Atlas Mountains offers dramatic scenery and a glimpse of Morocco’s natural landscape.

8. Antalya, Turkey

Antalya is the kind of place where you can wake up to the sound of waves and spend your days switching between ancient history and lazy beach vibes. The Old Town, Kaleiçi, is like stepping into a postcard, with its cobbled streets, Ottoman-era houses, and cosy little cafés tucked around every corner.

For a more laid-back day, the beaches here are just stunning, with crystalline water that’s perfect for swimming or just soaking up the sun.

Konyaaltı and Lara Beach are two favourites, each offering a slightly different vibe. And then there’s the food – expect vibrant meze plates, fresh seafood, and the kind of kebabs that’ll ruin all others for you. Pair it with a glass of raki, and you’re truly living the dream.

9. Cyprus

Cyprus is a sun-soaked gem that perfectly balances relaxation and adventure. Its beaches are nothing short of dreamy, with soft sands and waters so clear you’ll want to jump straight in. But there’s more to this island than just its coastline – the mix of Greek and Turkish influences makes it a fascinating place to explore a mix of culture in Cyprus.

Take a stroll through the old streets of Nicosia, where history peeks out from every corner, or head to the Troodos Mountains for a completely different vibe where you’ll find cool air, lush greenery, and beautiful villages. You’ll feel that it's a place where time feels like it’s slowed down, which is wonderfully refreshing, especially if you live a fast-paced city life like myself.

The food here is a highlight, too. It's a destination where you can enjoy long, leisurely meals of grilled halloumi, stuffed vine leaves, and sweet, sticky baklava, best enjoyed at a family-run taverna in places like Paphos with a glass of chilled wine.

And if you’re into mythology, you can visit the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite herself – the island is full of stories that are sure to fascinate you.

Nice is the kind of place that feels effortlessly chic yet welcoming at the same time. The Mediterranean breeze, pastel-coloured buildings, and lively markets create an atmosphere that’s undeniably attractive.

With so many hidden gems and sights to see in France, at the top of your Nice itinerary should be a stroll through the Old Town (Vieux Nice), where the narrow streets are lined with quaint shops, cafés, and stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade soaps. The Cours Saleya market is a real treat, especially if you’re into flowers or local delicacies.

For art lovers, the Matisse Museum is worth a visit – the setting itself is as beautiful as the works on display. And then there’s the food: from a classic salade niçoise to pissaladière, the flavours are simple yet delicious.

11. Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is a dream travel destination for anyone who loves natural beauty and unspoilt beaches. The coastline here is something else – think white sands meeting impossibly clear waters in shades of blue you didn’t know existed. But there’s so much more to see beyond the shoreline.

Head inland, and you’ll find rolling hills dotted with ancient stone villages and mysterious Nuragic ruins that give a glimpse into the island’s past. Foodies will be in their element too – Sardinian cuisine is all about fresh, local ingredients, from seafood straight off the boat to handmade pastas like fregola. The slower pace of life here is infectious – it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to linger, taking it all in, one sun-soaked moment at a time.

To conclude

So, that's it! I hope this guide has given you a spark of inspiration for your September holiday plans. Whether it’s wandering through Lisbon’s colourful streets, relaxing on Cyprus’s beautiful beaches, or finding joy in the fresh seafood in Sicily.

At this time of year, the smaller crowds at these popular tourist places make it a fantastic opportunity to explore at your own pace, especially if, like me, you’d prefer to visit when it's not as busy or hot.

Don’t forget to pack some comfy shoes, a good book for beach days or travelling, and, of course, your favourite sunglasses. Wherever you decide to go, make it a trip to remember – after all, there’s nothing quite like soaking up the sunshine while discovering somewhere new.
